Working to win access around Langness lighthouse for everyone

Words from the walk - 18th Nov. 2006

"The ‘organiser’ of today’s walk is the PROWL group, largely consisting of natives and long-term residents of Castletown & Malew, with just two or three of us from as far away as Port St. Mary and Port Erin.

"As well as thanking the core group members for all their hard work during the last year, I’d also like to thank the many hundreds who became registered supporters of PROWL, and the 127 who took the particular trouble to have their affidavits (declaring their use of the paths as a right for more than 21 years) signed in the presence of a legal authority.

"PROWL also appreciates the support given to the campaign by the Manx Footpaths Conservation Group, several members of the House of Keys and our local member of the Legislative Council.

"The situation as I currently understand it, is that the Attorney General has found PRoWL’s evidence to be convincing, that the two routes from the Langness car park have both become highways by virtue of their traditional unchallenged use and the Department of Transport is intending to call a meeting of all past and present landowners to see whether they claim to have any contrary evidence.

"It is now 20 months since the DoT was told that there was an intention to make the peninsula more exclusive, 10 months since PRoWL asked for Section 88 of the Highways Act to be implemented, 5 months since PRoWL presented all the evidence to the Attorney General, but the DoT hasn’t got further than THINKING of calling a meeting !

"PROWL’s question in the last few days before the election is simple: Will candidates agree to press the DoT to stop dragging its feet?

"It’s as simple as that. When the DoT looks at the evidence, the evidence will speak for itself. The route around the lighthouse became a Highway long ago, and the obstructions will need to be removed.

"It seems that political will is required before the DoT stops sitting on its hands, so let’s look to electing people who will show some vision and leadership, who will  restore to the Manx people and our visitors the traditional right to fully enjoy this spectacular section of the Manx coastline."
